Abstract : Artisanal small scale gold mining (ASGM) in Burkina Faso has contributed to the economical and societal development of this country, in spite of its unlawful characteristics. Nevertheless, rudimentary tools and technics were used in ASGM activity that induces a highly environmental dégradation throughout the inappropriate aspect of the activity and the use of the hazardous chemical compounds as cyanide. Lack of knowledge of the actual level of cyanide contamination in water and soil in Burkina Faso was observed. Two ASGM sites that are Zougnazagmiline and Galgouli located in Northern and Southern part of Burkina Faso respectively hâve been chosen for conducting a research about cyanide for the first time. The purpose of this study is to make an ASGM extraction responsible for protecting against the cyanide impacts on the environment and the human health. The actual level of cyanide pollution was studied and monitored by measuring two (02) cyanide forms as the free cyanide (CNL) and the total cyanide (CNT) présent in the water and soils samples. Water and soil resources in the two sites were contaminated with a maximum concentration higher than the guides values established by the World Health Organization with a value about 40 times. Thèse values that applied in Burkina Faso are 70 |ig L"1 for free cyanide in drinking water, 0.5 mg Kg"1 for free cyanide in agricultural soil. Cyanides are very mobile during the dry (SS) and wet season (SP). Aside the pollutant source zone formed by the cyanidation area cyanides were detected in other area far away as the catchment outlet and the sinking area and accumulated in the soil depth. Cyanide pollution has been modeled by using a map risk that includes the environmental factors influencing its spatial distribution. Thèse areas will form the places where water and soil bioremediation technology will be applied in the field. It was shown that the spatial distribution of cyanide was solely controlled by the soil type in Zougnazagmiline and both the soil type and conductivity in Galgouli. Before the field application of bioremediation technology, the cyanide degrading bacteria (BDC) that présent in polluted samples were isolated in a sélective médium in the laboratory scale. The isolated BDC species had degraded 99 % of the CNL and CNT within 24 h and 120 h, respectively with bacterial growth and ammonium production. The potentiality of thèse BDC that used is characterised by their capacity to develop under pH variation conditions (neutral, acidic and basic) and with or without nutrient aside the cyanide. Because the bacteria hâve a large range condition for surviving, they will easily adapt to the environment. It will be an advantage for using thèse bacteria in the future application for decontaminating water and soil polluted by cyanide. In addition, by the established model, the cyanide pollution will be easily modelled for the future years. Moreover, news indigenous species that able to dégrade cyanide were identified as the Providencia sp. Strain BAB-6345, Providencia stuartii Strain Bp-40 and Citrobacter sedlakii strain D5. |
