Note générale :	Exceptionality heavy storns at Samaru are rare. On the average eighty-five per cent of annual rains recordd during the past forty-five years are falls of below one inch, twelve per cent are between 1.0-2.0 inches and only the remaining three per cent are falls of greater than two inches. Recently a record fall of 6.01 inches was measured at the Samaru meteorological station. This has provided a rare opportunity for assessing the characteristics of heavy storms, and its effect on water economy in a small catchment basin, in terms of rainfall acceptance and the proportion lost in run-off. The storm also provided a unique opportunity for assessing the adequacy of the existing soil conservation and flood control measures at Samaru farm and for observing the utility of various land management fractices in preventing damage to land and crops.
