Note générale :	The productivity of rain-fed agriculture under good management in the tropics depends olmost entirely on the length of the rainy period, during which the supply of water is adequate. The research concerned with soil-water-plant relationship at Institute for Agricultural Research is geared firstly to provide information on the relativity and adequacy of watr supply during the growing season and secondly within the northern states of Nigeria and to match the pattrn of crop water requirement to the pattern of water availability. So far most of the work has been centred at Samaru although detailed analyses of the water budget at 20 stations representing all areas of the six northern states has also completed.
