Note générale :	Surface crusting in the cultivated loessic soils at Samaru, Nigeria, resultats from the breakdown of soil agregates due to rainfall impact and slaking. The surface crusts or caps consist of horizontal beddings and laminae of soil particules in a dispersed and compact condition. The macroporosity of crusts is reduced from about 17 to about 10 per cent with a consequent decrease in infiltration and increase in run-off. In spite of increased run-off surface crust are very effective in protecting soil against accelerated erosion. Drycrusts are unlikely to interfere with soil aeration, but under wet conditions diffusion of gases across the surface soil is reducd and this may have an adverse efect on crops.
