Note générale :	The purpose of this work was to extract lessons which could be translated into guidelines to oriente future development, in order to prevent costly and avoidable environmental impacts. The case study approach was chosen in view of the proven advantages of obtaining detailed understanding of a specific development. The Volta Lake was seen to constitute an excellent case study opportunity for a review of the environmental impact of impounding a tropical river. Impacts in the impoundment area have been well researched and documented, and they are not dissimilar from the known impact of the other african man-made lakes.
