The series of droughts in the late 1960's and early 1970's drastically reduces millet and sorghum production in Mauritania. Cereal imports reached 233, 000 mt in 1974. Average cereal demand in projected to increase by 5,100 mt /year between 1975 and 1980 and 1985. If only predrought levels of production are reestablished, even in years of good rainfull, cereal deficit could reach 72, 000 mt in 1980 and 103, 000 mt in 1985. Mauritania has initiated a number of development projects. Some contraints on production are low levels of fertilizer use, mechanization, improved seed and other improved technology and insufficient availability of credit and markets. Agronomic research data is very limited in Mauritania. The present and planned transportation network appears adequate for moving increased quantities of fertilizer to the more populated areas in the near future if adequate maintenance in performed. |
