Abstract : Composting toilet has the potential to destroy pathogens in several conditions by using sawdust as matrix. To adapt this toilet in Burkina Faso it is necessary to find another matrix which can decompose the organic matter in human waste. This study aimed to assess the evolution of pathogenic bacteria in composting toilet by using shea nut husk as matrix.
For the laboratory studies, E.coli, fecal coliform, fecal streptococci, spore of clostridium perfringens and salmonella were analyzed by the single layer method in respectively media Chromocult, Slanetz and Bartley, Viande foie and Rambach. Afterwards the survival of E.coli during composting days was appreciated by single layer method in Tryptic Soy Agar (TSA).The inactivation rate of E.coli was evaluated and the damaged parts and/or functions during the composting with three different media, which were Tryptic Soy Agar (TSA), Desoxycholate Agar (DESO) and Compact Dry EC (C-EC).
The results show that indicator bacteria (E.coli and fecal streptococci) behave similarly and their concentration decreased progressively during composting days. Likewise the number of pathogens (salmonella) was low and significantly reduced during the process. The shea nuts husk was significantly reduced the number of E.coli during all composting period. Indeed after 60 composting days the number of E.coli reduced by 6 log and the abatement value obtained was 99%.
There was no significant difference between inactivation rates constant by any three media, during the several conditions change. The shea nut husk can reduce the number of pathogenic bacteria in composting toilet, and this matrix affect lethally damaging part of pathogenic bacteria. |
