Note générale :	The 1986 amendements to the drinking water act require the US Environmental protection agency to promulgate national primary drinking water regulations spécifying creteria to determine which systems using surface water sources would be required to use filtration equipment. The agency is also developing criteria designed to assure that filtration is satisfactorily pacticed if it is required. Many of the thousands of unfiltered surface water supplies in the United States will be required to install some from of filtration technology. This article defines filtration and describes how the design and operation of a filtration system are related to the required performance and the quality of the water to be treated.
