Journal of applied meteorology. Estimating rainfall in regions of active convection / Gruiber, A.
Titre de série : Journal of applied meteorology Titre : Estimating rainfall in regions of active convection Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Gruiber, A. Mention d'édition : National Environmental Satellite Service Editeur : National Environmental Satellite Service Année de publication : 1973 ISBN/ISSN/EAN : CI-04945 Note générale : An attempt estimates rainfall in convectively active regions using kuo's parameterozation scheme has been made. The precipitation in this model is given by P = lQ1/ t, where P is the precipitation per unit time, l the fraction of a synoptic area covered by deep active convection. Q1 the amount of condensation heating to adiabatic ascent, and t a time parameter related to the precipitation lifetime of the convective elements. Investigation of the above equation when P, l and Q1 were available indicated that an appropriate time parameter was 30 min and that then main contribution to the precipitation comes from the l parameter. A case is presented where l is obtained from satallitea observations. The resulting precipitation estimate appeard quite reasonable. The potential for estimating precipitation over the tropical oceans is pointed out. Année de publication : 1971 ISBN/ISSN/EAN : CI-04494 Note générale : Storn rainfall data from dense raingage networks in illinois were employed in a study to determine the length of time required to obtain signification for various increase in storn rainfall due to weather modification efforts. The primary purpose was to evaluate the effect to stratifying the storn data on the detection of seeding effects for a given using highly accurate measurements of the rainfall parameters. It was also desired to evaluate the efficiency of various increases. Results indicate that the length of experimentation necessary for detection of seeding effects varies according to weather type, precipitation type, rainfall parameter, and statistical design employed.
