During the post-civil was years, migration west ward brought forth the need for more detailed knowledge of the nature and resources of the wast stretches of western lands. To meet this need, congress authorized four territorial surveys to explore the various parts of the west and gain a measure of its naturel features and resources. These surveys came to be known as the king, hayden, powell, and wheeler surveys, each named after its respective leader. |
