The hard environmental conditions of the african savanna particulary during the long dry season, at best allow a small accumulation of foodstuffs beyond normal requirements. Indigenous groups who traditionally rely upon cereal cultivation for their sustenance are often sorely pressed, particulary so when population is increasing. The concept of population carring capacity of an indigenous agricultural system is examined in Nangoli, which may be regarded as representative of Northeast Ghana and , some extent of other parts of the west african savanna zone. It is suggested that approximately 280 persons per square mile is the maximum possible population load whereas a density of ever 1,000 is found in parts of Nangoli with resultant soil exhaustion and erosion-River blindness adds to the problem of population pressure by rendering two-fifths of the land uncultivable - Emigration estimated at four percent per annum, is the only outlet. The residus population is structurally unballaced, sex ratio in the 15-44 age group being 52 males per 100 females. |
