Note générale :	This paper mainly deals with the hydrological precesses in the unsaturated zone. Firstly the most relevant theory concuring this zone is given. The saturated groundwater system and the atmospheric sustem constitute the boundaries of the unsatured zone. The relationship between these three system are discussed in short. An important issue is the mathematical description of water updake by plnt roots. Only the most common methods to quantifly this uptake are treated. An overview of the various categories of methods available to evaluate effects of changes in soil water conditions on evapotranspiration is presented - The probelms encountered in proctice mostly relate to the translation of model results to fiels situations. The various aspects with respect to this problem are discussed. Finally conclusions and recommendations are made.
