Note générale :	The Dakota aquifer in northwest Iowa consists of sandstones in the Dakota formation. It underlines most of the study area and is the most extensive source of groundwater in the area. Individual sandstone beds are from less than 10 to more than 150 feet thick. The cumulative thicknesse of sandstone is more than 200 feet throughout much of the area. The underlying confining material is shale of the Dakota formation undifferentiated paleozoic age rocks, or precambrian crystalline rock. The quality of water pumped from the underlying aquifers in paleozoic age rocks if withdrawals reverse the pattern of natural flow from the Dakota into the paleozoic aquifers. Evidence for such a reversal exists in the area around the city of Le Mars.
