Titre : The effects of surface disturbance on the salinity of public lands in the upper colorado river basin Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Bentley, R. G. ; Eggleston, K. O. ; Price, D. Mention d'édition : Bureau of Land Management/US.Department of the Interior Editeur : Bureau of Land Management/US.Department of the Interior Année de publication : 1978 ISBN/ISSN/EAN : CI-08931 Note générale : The prospect of Increasing salinity in the Colorado river, resulting from greater use off water (agriculture and industry) and soil disturbance, has prompted the department of the interior to study possible means of reducing salt yields from diffuse and point sources. The bureau of land Management, in this report, discusses the mechanisms involved in salt pichup and transport from diffuse sources on public lands, primarily from overland flow of water. The effects of cammon man - caused soil distrurbance, primarily livestock grazing, on salt yields are distcussed. Any pratice which compacts or disturbs soil, reduces infiltration, and increases runoff an erosion on saline soils, will inrease salt yields. Several comman practices, designed primarily to reduce erosion, were analysed to determine their ability to control salt. The most promising alternative practice were subjected to benefit - cost analysis to determine their economie.
