Titre : Water storage in soils : short term and long term effects Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Kampen, J. ; Singh, S. Mention d'édition : ICRESAT Editeur : ICRESAT Année de publication : 1974 ISBN/ISSN/EAN : CI-06111 Note générale : To achieve reasonable levels of production a continuous availability of water to the growing plant is essential. Except for irrigated lands and areas with shallow phreatic aquifers, the only source of moisture for crops in the semi-arid tropics is rainfall. In most of the seasonally dry tropics the rainfall patterns are erratic and brief or extended droughts are frequent. The soil funtions as a water storage medium/ rainfall infiltrates, some may be drained and a portion of the quantity held by the soil is slowly released to the growing crop during subsequent periods. In this paper, some aspects of soil and water management research in the recent past will be reviewed followed by a discussion of the direction in which research on this specific factor is moving at ICRISAT. It gives the outline of climate and precipitation, the soils and soil erosion and some aspects of soil and water management today.
