The population of the region has been increasing rapidly. The basic economy of the region is agricultural until recent years. Annual precipitation of the region is about 86 million acrefeet (110,000hm3)/ however, all but 4 millions acre - feet (4,900hm3) is returned to the atmosphere by evapotranspiration. The region appeas to offer several possibilities for utilizing underground space for purpose other than the withdrawal of water, such as waste disposal, artificial recharge, water - quality contral, and development of gesther mal energy.
