Abstract : Abomey-Calavi is the second biggest administrative districts of Benin with more than 800,000 inhabitants, has recently been experiencing a rapid urbanization like many other African urban areas. Two water supply sources provide Abomey-Calavi and Cotonou for water: there are family wells using the fresh stretch of water and the urban water network, fed by the ground water and run the state owned water company (SONEB).
The physical chemical and bacteriological quality of the wells and drillings in fourteen different areas of Abomey- Calavi has been measured in order to determine and to evaluate the state of ground water.
From a quantitative viewpoint, the germ numbering has let know after analysis, that all the water coming from wells are polluted by the fecal total, coliform and the fecal streptococci.
From a chemical analysis viewpoint 50% of the wells water investigated have got a nitrate content superior to the norms indicated by the WHO moreover an increase in chloride concentrations in already observable. But drillings located not far from those polluted waters show no presence of germs indicating any microbiological contamination yet. But the intensification of the saline intrusion phenomenon increasing at the level of the tapping field and more remarkable as a result of poor rain gauge year. The investigations made on the way waste and exhausted waters are managed show that several urbanization and metropolitan connected factors are the key reasons. |
