The purpose of this study was to compare several types of air conditioning systems in order to propose one for the building project of the head office of the Bank of Africa (BOA). This building possesses six levels on a total area about of seven thousand (7,000) square meters.
Systems which was studied are:
• The split system
• The air conditioning by variable refrigerant volume (VRV)
• The air conditioning by single package unit called rooftops and
• The air conditioning system by chilled water.
In energy efficiency terms, the air conditioning system by VRV is the most interesting with an energy efficiency ratio (EER) of 3.6. It is followed by the air conditioning system by chilled water with an EER of 3.19 and by the split system with an EER of 3. The air conditioning system by single package unit is the less high-performance with an EER of 2.99.
In economic terms, the air conditioning system by chilled water is the most expensive with an amount of about two billion and six hundred million (2,600,000,000 FCFA) of FCFA over 10 years. While the air conditioning system by single package unit presents the lowest costs with an amount of approximatively one billion and six hundred million (1,600,000,000) of FCFA. However this system presents technical difficulties in its implementation. The split system, as far as it is concerned, has the lowest costs of investment but the highest costs of exploitation over 10 years. In addition, this system isn’t appropriate for this type of building in aesthetic terms.
At last, in environmental terms, the air conditioning system by chilled water has the highest rate of carbon dioxide (CO 2) emission which is about one thousand two hundred (1,200) tCO2/year, against the single package unit system whose rate is seven hundred seventy two (772) tCO2 /year.
Hence the central air conditioning system by VRV is the one proposed for the BOA’s building project for technical, economic and environmental reasons. |
