Abstract : This master’s thesis entitled “Technical review towards de construction of the Bandja-Fotouni-Balessing road in the West region of Cameroon” and essentially based on the hydrological and hydraulics aspects of the technical review, aims at proposing hydraulic crossing structures for the reestablishment of the flow of rivers interacting with the road which is subject of the study.
To do so, we had to first of all, delineate the watersheds interacting with the two road layouts. This was done in order to determine de peak flowrate of return period T, across the watersheds interacting with the road. We delineated 39 watersheds for itinerary 1 and 23 watersheds for itinerary 2 which we represented as maps at a scale of 1:50000. The peak flowrates were calculated using the methods – crupédix, rational method, CIEH, NRCS and Gradex. We shall see later in the report that the application of these methods depends on the surface area of the watersheds and the analysis showed that the CIEH method wasn’t suitable because it resulted in the underestimation of the flowrates as compared to the other methods hence, wasn’t taken into account in the validation of the final flowrates.
The validation of the final flowrates is the average of the individual flowrates obtained by the different methods. After getting the peak flowrates, we proceeded to the hydraulic design of the crossing structures using the abacus method. It was found that the crossing structures are scupper drains (in replacement to the existing metallic culverts) and bridges. We proposed 39 crossing structures (37 scupper drains and 2 bridges) for option 1 and 23 crossing structures (21 scupper drains and 2 bridges) for option 2, making it 1 crossing structure per watershed. For watersheds having a main watercourse, we proposed bridges. These bridges will be further detailed during the detailed design phase, when the state will have retained the variant to be implemented. |
