For period of four years, accurate records are kept during the operation of silage making at shika Agricultural Research Station, Institute for agricultural Research Zaria-Between 1968 and 1970 the yield of maize (Zea mays) silage in increased by 120 per cent from 20 t/ha (8 tons/acre) to 44 ha (17.7 tons/acre) and the cost production dropped by 61 per cent from F2-9-11d to 19/2d per tonne . The reasons of increased effeciency in production can be attributed to the use of the herbicide Atrazine which doubled the plant population, abolished weeding and by permitting the use of a seed drill instead of planter units halved the planting time. The supposion that the absence of annual seed-bed cultivation makes elephant grass, silage less expansive than maize silage is disproved as the hight cost of harvesting twice a year raise the cost of elephant grass silage considerably. The cost the elephant grass silage, as suming a productive life of 10 years, would be 26/9d per tonne. |
